How to Join

We hope many universities and colleges will join this effort to assist scholars who are under attack.

If you are currently hosting a scholar or would like to host a scholar, we very much hope that you will sign on to become a member of the New University in Exile Consortium.

While the New University in Exile Consortium usually does not directly identify endangered scholars in need of hosting, we will connect you to the Institute of International Education Scholar Rescue Fund and Scholars at Risk which do.

Becoming a Member

Whether an institution is already hosting a scholar or plans to host one in the near future, it can join the New UIE Consortium no matter what stage of the hosting process they are currently in. Becoming a member entails:

  1. A commitment to host and support at least 1 exiled and/or endangered scholars, selected by your institution, for two years with the understanding that a re-evaluation will take place at the end of the first year. (If you are currently hosting an endangered scholar, that would qualify.)
  2. Identifying a liaison person on your campus to represent your institution and work with the New University in Exile Consortium.
  3. Providing scholars with funding for travel and lodging to attend programs hosted by The New School.

Endangered Scholar Criteria

An endangered scholar is defined as anyone with a PhD or equivalent degree who has held a teaching or researcher position in an institution of higher education beyond graduate school and has faced or recently (within the past two years) fled from severe and targeted threats to their lives and/or careers in their home countries or countries of residence. Endangered scholars should have some evidence of academic accomplishments or promise.
