The New University in Exile Consortium programs are meant to provide a roadmap for rescued scholars to assist them in navigating the U.S. higher education system, significantly decrease the sense of isolation and dislocation from which they all suffer, and to enhance dialogues around global threats to academic freedom, the value of free inquiry, and the future of education and scholarship.
These online and in-person programs include:
scholar seminar
- A year-long academic seminar designed with and for the scholars on a subject of their choosing. This year the seminar is being led by Richard Bernstein, Vera List Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research.
workshops
- These are focused on a range of topics to assist scholars with navigating the U.S. higher education system, including academic publishing, applying for fellowship/grant funding, and visa issues.
online courses
- These are designed to assist stranded overseas academics (those who have been fired with passports confiscated) and students. These are co-taught by a Consortium academic and a stranded overseas colleague. These courses are free to all students anywhere in the world. They ultimately will serve as a model for other places in the world where scholars and their academic freedom are threatened. This year the first seminar offered in Spring 2019 is co-led by the New School for Social Research’s University in Exile Fellow and a stranded Turkish colleague.
- The Consortium and Off-University offered a tuition-free online 10-week seminar in fall 2019 entitled “Identity and Conflict in the Middle East.” This seminar was open to anyone and was led by Nazan Bedirhanoglu & Elcin Aktoprak in English.
annual conference
- An annual public event held at the end of each spring semester, the topics of which will focus on preserving academic freedom and free inquiry and will showcase the work of Consortium hosted scholars.
welcome event
- An event held at the beginning of the fall semester to introduce scholars to each other and to initiate discussion of possible topics for the seminar.
scholar publications
- The Consortium works with hosted scholars to publish their work in New School-based publications, including Public Seminar and Social Research: An International Quarterly, as well as in Consortium-based publications.
scholar lecture series
- Lecture opportunities for Consortium hosted scholars to gain academic exposure. This lecture series will enable each of the scholars to speak at the other Consortium campuses and will benefit students at Consortium institutions by raising awareness of the current threats to academic freedom and free inquiry.
scholar summer retreat
- This will be held over 2-3 days at a Consortium campus for scholars and their families.
biweekly summer online scholar meetings
- These meetings will be online and provide a way for the scholars to remain in touch with each other and with the Consortium organizers.
liaison meetings
- These meetings will be held twice a semester face to face and at least once a semester online.
